Across the River
Prior to the beginning of an episode of “Bonanza” on television there was a warning statement in bold print across the screen: “This program contains outdated cultural depictions. Viewer discretion is advised.” That had me quite curious and so I wanted to know what the reason for such a warning could possibly be. The story was about a former well-known painter who had lost his vision. He was repeatedly referred to as blind, so I assume that merited the warning. The episode of “Gunsmoke” which followed had the same warning, but I didn’t watch to know about the topic. I thought of all the times I had been in conversation with others who used words that are culturally outdated and offensive. We would all do well to remember the warning before we start talking and be mindful of our insensitivities towards others.
