SOME OF MY FAVORITES: The question that I am asked most often is “What Are Some of Your Favorite Stories?” Gosh, there have been so many. One of the earliest talks I can remember is with then School Superintendent Roland Roussel. I could sit and listen to his stories for hours. He was so filled with wisdom that I felt that each time I met with him was like sitting in a classroom learning life lessons. He knew about voting and elections. Most importantly, he knew what was needed to pass a bond issue. He knew that asking voters to approve funding for something intangible like “instructional improvements” would not pass on its own. He advised the school board to have that election at the same time as bonds for a stadium or improvements to schools—things that could be seen. Voters were more apt to approve physical and visible projects. Mr. Roland had his own theories about school board and other election. He always suggested that I observe who a particular candidate was seen with in public and who followed that candidate as the best way to learn about the candidate’s loyalties.
