Across the River

WHO HAS THIS DIAMOND RING? I have a hunch that someone in the Lutcher-Gramercy-Convent area still has the diamond ring won by their grandmother or great grandmother in the Miss St. James contest held in January 1942. The contest was staged by the Joy and Lutcher theaters under the sponsorship of theater manager Phil Duncan. The winner received a diamond ring purchased from Antin’s Jewelers. Vying for the title were Doris Vedros Virginia Calderera, Edright Bourgeois, Jeanne Copponex, Marguerite St. Pierre, Beulah Roussel, Anna Mae Carona, Gloria Matherne, Melba Braud, Ruth Brignac, Thelma Malbrough, Yvonne St. Pierre, Audrey Deroche. Also in the contest were Shirley Esnault, Floris Decaraux, Grace Bourgeois, Mae Martin, Marie Lemoine, Thelma Lee, Elsie Richard, Thelma Hymel, Ada Mae Peltier, Beryl Esnault and Gloria Roussel. If someone in your family won the contest, take a look around for the diamond ring prize.
