Mayoral Proclamation Limits The Sale Of Alcohol In Town Of Lutcher
After several Lutcher Aldermen and many members of the public expressed their fears and concerns with Lutcher Mayor Patrick St. Pierre that certain retail establishments in the Town of Lutcher could very well be hot spots to spread the COVID-19 virus, St. Pierre opted to take action in the name of public safety.
On Tuesday, St. Pierre issued a Mayoral Proclamation that states, beginning on Friday, April 17th and ending when the State of Emergency is lifted, businesses in Lutcher are prohibited to dispense and/or sell alcohol and or alcoholic beverages between the hours of 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The goal of the Proclamation, which only applies to businesses in Lutcher and will be in effect until the Mayor lifts the emergency order, is to limit, reduce and prevent large gatherings of people inside and outside of retail businesses where alcohol is sold.
There have been eye witness accounts of groups exceeding the 10-person maximum and the businesses in question have failed to institute any real efforts to encourage social distancing while patrons are inside and outside the establishments.
According to the Proclamation, Any retail establishment that violates this order, shall have its municipal license or license to sell alcoholic beverages immediately revoked until the State of Emergency is lifted by the Mayor. Any person caught violating this order, may also be charged, fined, and imprisoned, as per Section 6-38 of the Lutcher Code of Ordinances.
Also on Tuesday, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen met, and in accordance with the social distancing order, gathered on the front lawn of the Lutcher Town Hall to hold their meeting while remaining at least 6-feet apart.
The main item on the agenda was to introduce and set a Public Hearing on the Town’s annual operating budget that begins on May 1, 2020 and ends April 30, 2021.
A Public Hearing was scheduled be held on April 29, 2020 at 5:00 p.m.
In other matters, the Board:
*Proclaimed April as Flood Awareness Month and Fair Housing Month.
*Mayor St. Pierre told the Aldermen there will be a teleconference on April 16th between the Town’s engineer and prospective contractors that are interested in doing the work on the King Avenue resurfacing project.
St. Pierre said to date there are at least six contractors looking to bid and the bids will be opened on April 30th.
He also said a walkthrough with prospective contractors and the Town’s engineer will take place later in the day on April 16th.
