On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at the age of 72, Zedel Sutherland Oubre heeded the Master’s call. After a lengthy battle with cancer, Our Heavenly Father through his infinite wisdom dispatched his angels.
Born on February 20, 1953, in New Orleans, La to Clinton Sutherland, Sr. and Marline Ferchaud Sutherland, Zedel was the fourth of ten children.
In June of 1971, Zedel was united in matrimony to Harry J. Oubre, Sr. for 54 loving years. To this union four children were born, Shantel Nicole, Gabrielle Nicole (Chris), Harry J. Oubre, Jr., and Nicole Renee’. Zedel leaves to cherish her ten grandchildren: Shay, Talen, Zahn, Kenzi, Cazz, Haley, Makayla, Alex, Harley, and Zion. As well as her two great-grandchildren King Carson and Skylar Nicole.
Zedel was a graduate of Magnolia High Class of 1971. She went onto Southern University and A&M College where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education.
Professionally, Zedel worked at Union Carbide for 17 years as a Heavy Maintenance Clerk. She later went on to fulfill her desire in education as a teacher in the St. James Parish School district for 22 years where she was known as “Mum” to her students who she treated as her own.
She leaves behind her little sister, Mathilda and three brothers: Gary, Herman (Charlene) and Thaddeus Sr. (Laura). A brotherin- law Florian Jr. (Audrey) and four sisters-in-law Dianna, Maxine, Stephanie, and Marilyn; four godchildren, Beanie, Anya, Jada, Rashaan, and Tasha. Two lifelong friends, Sylvia “Monnie” Winchester-Tankerson, Joycelyn LeBeouf, her “Dining Divas,” Lorraine, Betty, Cindy, Carrie, Colonel, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
Zedel is preceded in death by her parents, Clinton Sr. and Marline Ferchaud Sutherland, grandson Tylen Jermaine Oubre, her big sister Joyce, her brothers Clinton Jr., Tyrone Sr., Eugene Sr., Allen and sisters- in-law Elaine and Cindy.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 5, 2025 at St. James Catholic Church, 6613 LA18, St. James, LA 70086 with visitation began for 9:00 a.m. and Mass followed at 11:00 am. Entombment St. James Catholic Church Cemetery. Arrangements of her final care entrusted to Treasures of Life Funeral Services, 315 E. Airline Hwy., Gramercy, LA 70052.
