If you’ve been to a high school volleyball game you’ve seen them. Line judges. In addition to the referees, two students are positioned by the back line to indicate whether a ball lands in or out of the baseline.

ANOTHER GRINDING SEASON UNDERWAY: My friend Dickie Gravois told me Sunday at church that his grinding season would begin on Tuesday, September 23. He hauls his cane to the mill in Raceland. He reminded me that my daily trip to Thibodaux will likely take at least an additional 30 minutes and I should be sure to leave home early enough. Many mornings I follow a cane truck from Vacherie to Thibodaux because it’s impossible to pass a cane truck in the early morning traffic. It’s a test of patience to travel the entire way at 40 miles per hour. I think I will listen to books on my way. This year we will all need extra patience as work is set to resume real soon on the Bayou Chevreuil Road, further complicating the traffic and time issue. Be patient and courteous to other drivers and be careful, for your own sake and for your precious passengers.

Can you picture a Louisiana landscape without crape myrtles, camellias and azaleas — all of which are native to Asia — or tropical selections like gingers and elephant ears?
