A SPORTS LEGEND IS NOW WATCHING FROM THE PRESSBOX: This week, Coach Allen Hymel left the sports arena of life for the last time. From now on he’ll be watching from the grand press box. Coach Hymel knew St. James High School Wildcat history like no other because he lived it. He played Wildcat football until he graduated in 1955. After college and military service, he went on to teach math and coach football and track in St. John the Baptist and St. James Parish schools for 30 years. In 2022, he was inducted into the St. James High School Hall of Fame, a highlight of his life. His football jersey and his jacket hang on the wall at the school, preserved for all to see. He also enjoyed watching and attending LSU sporting events. He and his wife, Rose Marie Gravois Hymel, were married 67 years. He had four children, ten grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren. The Hymel and Gravois families, friends, former players and students filled St. Philip Church in Vacherie on Tuesday evening, and the line of visitors extended out the doors and almost to the highway. It was the same on Wednesday morning before the service. St. James High and LSU fans will be down by one this season. He may not be in his usual spot, but he will be there, just watching from a different location, the best seats.
